Moscow Metro: a city guide underground.

The Metro is one of Moscow's most important ways to get around. This guide covers airport connections, fares, Troika cards, and how to explore the stations themselves.

Airport routes into the city

The connection depends on which airport you use. Check the current route and timetable on the day of travel.

Vnukovo (VKO)

The Airport Vnukovo Metro station is directly connected to the terminal, making VKO the simplest airport-to-Metro connection.

Sheremetyevo (SVO)

There is no Metro station at the airport. Continue by Aeroexpress train to the city or by airport bus, including the express bus to Khovrino Metro station.

Domodedovo (DME)

There is no Metro station at the airport. Use Aeroexpress or the express bus to Domodedovskaya Metro station, then continue by Metro.

Aeroexpress: a train service that runs to a fixed timetable between Moscow rail terminals and Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports. It does not currently operate to Vnukovo. Its ticket is separate from a Metro fare. Cash is accepted at staffed ticket offices; a Troika e-wallet, Mir, and other supported methods depend on the purchase channel and current conditions. Many foreign-issued bank cards are not accepted locally, so plan on cash rubles or a Russian-issued card and check the official payment methods and the current timetable before travel.

Tickets and 2026 fares

The easiest option for most international visitors is a Troika card topped up with cash rubles at a Metro ticket office. Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard cards generally do not work for local payments in Russia. A Russian-issued contactless bank card may be used for the bank-card fare.

Want help with your first Metro journey?

By arrangement, a Moscow Assist team member can meet you at the airport and accompany you on an agreed route using the available airport connection and Metro. We can prepare and top up a Troika card in advance, then explain the simple rules for tapping in, transfers, and keeping the card for the return trip. Aeroexpress or bus tickets are separate where needed.

A working transport system and an underground museum

The first Metro stations opened on 15 May 1935. In 2026 the system is 91 years old; it now has 17 lines, 309 stations including the MCC, and more than 560 km of track. New stations continue to open, while many central stations preserve architecture and decorative work from the Soviet period.

Visitors often look for Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, and Kropotkinskaya for their mosaics, stained glass, marble, reliefs, and sculptural details. Some marble contains ancient marine fossils millions of years old.

We can arrange a guided Moscow Metro architecture tour. Tour length, route, language, and date are agreed in advance; price on request. Read about the official Moscow Metro tours as well.

Prefer a car or taxi?

The Metro is excellent for many city trips, but a car may be more practical with luggage, late arrivals, or a distant destination. We can help arrange an airport transfer or chauffeur and explain local taxi options.
